Havana
Havana
is one of the oldest and most picturesque cities
in the western hemisphere. The old part of the
city is located at the port entrance. It is famous
for its narrow streets, old houses with patios
and its colonial architecture. It is also known
for its parks, plazas and glamorous streets, such
as the famed Calle Obispo. Havana's nightlife is just as good, if not better
than, the nightlife in the major North and South
American cities. For an irresistible experience,
visit Bodeguita del Medio, where Hemingway, Salvador
Allende and Fidel Castro used to sip on their
Daiquiris and Mojitos. By the way, Hemingway was
a frequent guest at the hotel Ambos Mundos. One
can see his original hotel room, number 511, containing
a typewriter and a bottle of whiskey.
Viñales
This internationally known region lies 180 km
west from Havana in Sierra de los Organos, in
Pinar del Rio province. It has stunning scenery,
rich flora and fauna and interesting cave systems,
the largest on Cuba and Antilles. The valley's
specific character is created through Jurassic
rocks and cliffs. One of its attractions are
mogotes, the lime stone peaks with steep sides
and partly rounded crests. Their height can
reach up to 400 meters. The
tobacco plantations make this region even more
attractive and interesting. Rural Viñales, a
place in country style, is located between mountains.
It is very picturesque and rich in traditions
and customs. A typical feature of Viñales is
the combination of colonial and classical style
elements, pillars, red roofs and the colourful
windows in the houses, most of which were built
at the end of 18th/ beginning of the 19th century.
Las
Terrazas
The
community of Las Terrazas in eastern Pinar del
Río belongs to the Nature Park Sierra
del Rosario, Cuba's first UNESCO-sanctioned
biosphere reserve. Here you can find the ruins
of about 20 French coffee estates dating back
to the 19 th century, sulphurous springs, an
artists' colony with small art galleries and
diverse leisure facilities. Enjoy the pristine
nature of Las Terrazas and relax at on of the
picturesque lakes and waterfalls. |
