The History of Calabria

Prehistory   Findings show the presence of a Palaeolithic man dates the most ancient human presence found in Casella di Maida from over half million years ago.

1054-1194:   The Normans conquered Calabria, they brung stability and a state-controlled feudal system.

 

15-18 Century:   The Spanish House of Aragon, ruled in southern Italy and Sicily. The Arberesh, Christians from Albania, are on the run from the Turks settled in Calabria.

 

1800-1860:   Napoleon Bonaparte's brother-in-law, Joachim Murat becomes King of Naples in 1808. The misery of the people leads to emigration, mainly to America.
