Calabria for the Big & Small - Family Travel
Itinerary
Day 1 Arrival
Arrive at your booked accommodation. Here you can first rest, then have dinner and overnight stay.
Day 2 Trip to the Middle Ages
Today we go to Gerace, a medieval town that seems to stand still in time after centuries have past. One of the main attractions in Gerace take us to the big Norman Cathedral dating back to 1045. A walk through the old streets, past still intact and inhabited houses of the early Middle Ages, introduces us to the main piazza. A (non-alcoholic) drink concludes our tour from Gerace. In the early afternoon on the beach of Locri cozy picnic will be held. For children there is a beautiful playground right on the beach.
Day 3 Coastal town of Pizzo
The first stop is now Francavilla Angitola. The "Emigration Museum" turns out to be quite vivid and an exciting small museum about the adventures of the great emigration movement, which brought many southern Italians to Germany and America. The museum is from the time of carriages, the first motorized vehicles came only a few years later. An exodus of the uncertain, week-long cruise to an unknown world. After a leisurely strolling we continue to have lunch in a typical farm in Pizzo. In the afternoon there is scene change: we go into the hustle and bustle of the town of Pizzo. Especially the "Piedigrotta" - one of shipwrecked in the tufa hewn cave church, right down to the beach with many sculptures - and the "Castello Murat", which Zieten long served as a prison, are on our program. A MUST is also the famous Tartufo ice cream which has its origin in Pizzo, and can be tasted in countless bars on the square.
Day 4 Folklore - Onion Farmer and Calabrian Peasant Dance
Today we enjoy the outlook at Capo Vaticano, a lighthouse and two wonderful vantage points provide the unique view of the steep rugged coast with its beautiful small rocky coves. In clear weather you can even see up to Sicily!
Continue on to the nearby fields to see the onion farmers: here is where the red onions are grown, which are much sweeter and tastier than conventional bulbs. Depending on the season onion braids can be braided or we look at the preparation of pickled onions and other vegetables. Lunch (included) then trying inter alia, delicious onion treats! You will be amazed how well your children will love them! In the afternoon a lot of fun awaits you in our dance workshop to learn some basic steps of the Calabrian costume dance - the "Tarantella". Our professional dance teacher has a lot of experience and imagination in dealing with all age groups.
Day 5 Ghost Village Pentedattilo
In the morning drive to the fishing village of Scilla, with its fabulous beach promenade and the little romantic fishermen's houses, which are closely connected to the ocean shore. Scilla is the most famous city of the Costa Viola. An ancient Greek legend of Homer's "Odyssey" describes the Seemonster Scylla, which all ships passing inexorably devoured. At noon, it is a fish restaurant (also alternatively without fish).
In the early afternoon deals after Pentedattilo - picturesque and rustic village deserted known as a ghost town. Behind the maze of alleyways, rooftops and half-ruined stone houses with arched portals that protrud a cliff with five prongs on it. The Pentedaktylos (Greek for 5 finger) gave the city its Byzantine origin name. A walk through the abandoned house leads us to nature, which are less than an hour walk around the five fingers.
Day 6 Pasta Cooks & Pizza Bakers
Today, prepare for some good eats! While the smaller children will be avid pizza makers, prepare yourself to experienced native cooking in our cooking school. Complete a lunch menu of fresh Calabrian specialties and delicious lemon liqueur "limoncello" that you will prepare yourself. So, when you are at home again you will literally live the experiences on your vacation.
In the afternoon, go to the ancient caves of Zungri, which are very close. A wonderful outing to relax at the end of this eventful week.
Day 7 Stops through Tropea
In the morning we suggest a trip to Tropea to the Italian market. Also the famous seaside town has many small bars and is great for souvenir shopping, strolling and lingering. Our tour in this town takes you past all the sights in this medieval town and, of course, to the best souvenir shops!
In the afternoon get comfortable and relax in your hotel or you can enjoy the nearby beach. Also boat trips and mountain bike Catamaran tours can be booked directly on the spot.
Day 8 Arrivederci!
Have an Italian breakfast and enjoy your return journey home.
