Geographical Location

With its unspoiled nature, archaeological treasures, amazing cliffs, picturesque bays with fantastic sandy beaches, coastal towns and the stone relics of an ancient cultural history- Calabria is more than just a vacation getaway. Located in the "boot"of Italy, has 485 miles of coastline along the Tyrrhenian and the Ionian Sea. Calabria, one of the 2 regions of Italy, has 2.1 million inhabitants and is approximately 15,080 sq km.
Calabria has a predominantly mountainous landscape, for example the Pollino and Orsomarso mountains we see in the north. The huge green reserves and spectacular lakes in the interior of the Sila mountains fall steeply from the coast into the sea. Bordered by the sea on three sides is the Aspromente mountains. The eternal contradictions, legendary stories of shepherds tell inaccessible due to a constant change of light increases and steep mountains, places that different, even bizarre and weirdly and distort enchant, as well as suddenly and unexpectedly appearing flora and fauna, all that makes the impression to be in Scotland, and - a few steps from the Mediterranean maquis.
The regional capital of Calabria is Catanzaro. Built in the Byzantine times, Catanzaro was under Norman control as an important capital of the vast earldom of Ruffo. Economic crises, the plague, and the devastating earthquake of 1638 and 1783 led to the temporary decline of the city. The urban restructuring of Catanzaros has since taken place. Corso Mazzini, still overloads of the mansions lined the penultimate turn of the century, running through the Old Town. Hardly any of the old buildingsare left from the numerous disasters. Thus, apart from the bustling Catanzaro normality of an Italian province, being the Capital Region since 1971, visitors are sadly offered little.

Flora & Fauna
Calabria has two ecosystems: the coastal and the inland mountains. The coastline of the Tyrrhenian Sea is characterized by olive trees, lemon and fruit trees such as plum and pear trees. In the area between Capo Vaticano and Parghelia typically has onion plantationsl due to the composition and evolution of the land. Other vegetations of this region are, for example, cauliflower, zucchini, tomatoes, beans, lettuce, pepper, eggplant and strawberries.

In the mountain regions are always associated with oaks sempreverdi (sclerofilla), these form an ecosystem which is necessary to combat the drought in this country: The sclerofilla reduces the distribution of water and the oaks provide a stable temperature during the cold winter. The area is preferred for construction of cereals, vegetables and animal feed.

The fauna of the two different areas is characterized by the presence of foxes, deer, owls, gulls and cardinals, as well as many other species. The native sparrow feels very secure on the coast of Capo Vaticano.
