Itinerary
Day 1 Arrival
Arrive at your booked accommodation.
Day 2 Monte Fistocchio - Exploration Tour
Breakfast at the hotel. Pick up from there at 10:00 am, and transfer to the forest lodge Biancospino in Aspromonte. Pleasant cocktails and mutual acquaintance with the tour guides. In the afternoon, the first hike to Monte Fistocchio (1568m). Here you have a wonderful view of both seas and the Monte Alto. Additionally, see the ruins of former watch tower that is guards the road from the Tyrrhenian to the Ionian Sea. Walk starts directly from the forest hut, walk about 3 hours. Spend the night at the Biancospino forest lodge.
Day 3 Montalto
Breakfast in the forest hut. Trip to the "level of Carmelia" (mt. 1267) and from there walk to the Montalto (mt. 1956). Wonderful forest of beech and white fir. Interestingly, you will see the change in the vegetation closer you get to the summit of Montalto. On top is unique view: the Straits of Messina, Etna, the Ionian and Tyrrhenian Sea all the way to the Aeolian Islands and the southernmost foothills of the Appenzell Inner mountains - all this is the hiker's view. Duration 6 ½ hours. Dinner and stay overnight at the Biancospino forest lodge.
Day 4 Romantic views & coastal town of Palmi
Breakfast in the forest hut. Morning walk through Sant'Elia di Palmi (mt. 575) along the mountain flank of Mount S. Elia with breathtaking views of the Costa Viola (southern Tyrrhenian coast) and the Aeolian Islands. Walking time approximately 3 hours. In the afternoon, the coastal town of Palmi: In Palmi visit the Tonnara - a museum around tuna fishing and the archaeological zone of Pietre Nere with remnants from the days of the ancient Greeks and Romans, but also with various artefacts from prehistoric times.
Day 5 Between Two Seas
Breakfast in the forest hut. Luggage is brought to the next base. The group will go towards the Ionian Sea. First hike to Monte Misafumera (mt. 1390) through a magnificent beech forest of white fir, maple and holly trees. A circle around the mountain is at the top of Mount Scorda (mt. 1572). From here one last view of the Tyrrhenian Sea, then continue down for the Ionic Pietra Cappa (mt. 737) - a giant rock that is unique in its kind. On the way there are encounter rare rock formations, cliffs and caves, which centuries ago have been used by hermits. Hence the name "Rocche di San Pietro (St. Peter, the rock). Duration: approximately 7 hours. Dinner and overnight stay in a farmhouse in Ciminà
Day 6 Powerful rocks - Tre Pizzi
Breakfast in the Farmhouse. Hike to Monte Tre Pizzi (mt. 710), with its three mighty rocks that overhangs above the bare valley of Locri. On the way there, go through the hamlet of Ciminà (mt. 232) where you can still see ancient customs of the pasture, forestry and farming culture of the Aspromonte mountains, through thick Mediterranean vegetation with strawberry trees (fruit stand February-March). Duration: about 4 hours. Dinner and overnight stay in a farmhouse in Ciminà.
Day 7 Gerace & Return to the Tyrrhenian Coast
Breakfast in the Farmhouse. Today you will learn about the past in the medieval town of Gerace: here the time seems to stand still! Immediately upon arrival you will be met by the ruins of the castle. The pleasant stroll through the old streets gives you a feeling of the past and leads you past still intact and inhabited buildings from medieval times. You also have the opportunity to go shopping. Gerace once had over 42 churches. Visit the simple and powerful Cathedral, the largest church building throughout Calabria. At lunchtime take a trip to the Tyrrhenian coast side (Capo Vaticano), and arrive at the hotel at 2:00 o'clock.
Day 8 Arrivederci!
One last Italian Breakfast at hotel. Transfer to airport and enjoy your return journey.
